With a multitude of freshers week activities starting this weekend, we’ve hand-picked a selection of events especially for you.
For those of you staying in halls of residence this year, this is a chance to get to know your fellow residents better, and to meet students from other halls. Head over to The Venue (Kent Union, Mandela Building, University of Kent, Canterbury CT2 7NW) and dance the night away. Free entry with an annual ‘Kentertainment’ pass, or £6 on the door.
With a media production team attending to take photographs throughout the night, the dress code for the Canterbury Freshers Ball this year is “Dress to Impress”. So get your glad rags on for this unmissable night of partying including a live DJ. Arrive before 10pm for free entry. Situated at the Old Brewery Tavern in Canterbury.
If you don’t live in halls of residence or student accommodation, it can be hard to meet students in a similar situation. Pop along to the Student Media Centre for a coffee and a chat. Monday: Mature Students. Tuesday: Students with Dependants. Wednesday: Part-time Students. Thursday: Commuting Students.
This event is being laid on especially for international students. Hopefully you’ve already met some fellow overseas students, but if not, it’s time to put on your dancing shoes and celebrate with music from around the world. Tickets cost £3 and be purchased at the Kent Union.
Don’t forget your school uniform for this one – this throwback party is fancy dress. Located at The Venue, “Vensday” is Kent Union’s biggest weekly student night throughout the term, so make the most of your first Wednesday night at UKC. Free entry with an annual ‘Kentertainment’ pass, or £6 on the door.
Make sure you don’t miss the Fresher’s Fayre as this is your chance to meet a host of reps from the university and student union, as well as organisers of various clubs and societies that you may fancy joining. This is also where you can find details of job opportunities if you find need a little extra cash to help see you through the term.
Now this is one event you cannot miss! With headline acts including rapper Tinchy Stryder, UK soul singer Kelli Leigh, and America’s Got Talent professional regurgitator Stevie Starr, there is something for everyone. And that’s not all. As well as a night of dancing, there’ll also be a casino, a magic show and a special performance by Circus of Horrors to entertain you into the small hours.
Too much eating, drinking and general partying during the freshers week celebrations? Why not limber up and take part of the University of Kent’s freshers park run and burn a few calories at the same time? Don your lycra and meet fellow runners at The Pavilion at 9am.
Beware – this Canterbury-wide event is widely known as the biggest party of Freshers Week and sells out quickly. Includes an inflatables party, cheap drinks and great music, so get your tickets asap!
There’s some seriously tasty food on offer over the weekend at Woodys barbecue party, Park Wood Road, Canterbury. Feel free to bring your family or new flatmates along for a burger or two.
